| Amanda Storm has just moved to Ludlow, New Hampshire to start over. After three divorces and a broken engagement, Amanda has decided the best thing she can do for herself is to try to get along without a man in her life. Since the time she was five, Amanda has had someone looking after her and protecting her at every moment. It’s time to spread her wings, even if she’s afraid of failing. So, she’s bought a small cottage in dire need of repairs. She’s going to college to become a nurse and she has plans to do it all alone. She doesn’t need a man.
Enter Joe Baker, her neighbor. He’s very intrigued by Amanda’s independent spirit but he can tell she’s also running from something in her past. Joe wants to get to know Amanda, but she’s adamant about keeping men out of her life. Will he ever get the chance to really show her that he may just be the man she needs? Joe has baggage of his own, so opening up his heart to Amanda isn’t easy for him either, but he’s willing to give it a shot. Will Amanda be brave enough to do the same? Miss Independent is part of Elisa Adams’ Storm family series and it’s another winner. Amanda’s attempts to be independent are simultaneously humorous and heart wrenching because she truly is learning as she goes. Joe’s confident attitude is a good foil to Amanda’s less than confident attitude about life and men and they strike emotional sparks off each other. I really liked how Joe didn’t let his baggage weigh him down. While certainly nervous about taking another chance on love, he couldn’t let Amanda pass him by. When worse came to worse, even Amanda wasn’t stupid enough to pass up Joe’s help and abilities as a contractor. There’s independence and there is stupidity and Amanda did not cross that line. Miss Independent is smart, enjoyable and filled with realistic obstacles.
