| Strange things are happening at Rothfield Park.
Imogen Drake’s sister, Jane, tells of hearing the
ghostly screams of a child in her bedroom. It reminds
Imogen of the story of the Marquis of Rothfield, who,
some sixty years before, had restored the estate.
Soon after the repairs were completed, a fire had
burned much of the manor, killing a small child. It
was said that this had driven him mad, and he died
soon after.
To calm Jane, Imogen offers to trade rooms, and then goes to speak with her father. He informs Imogen that she will be getting a tutor who will prepare her to be the wife of Colonel Wallace. She doesn’t want a tutor or Colonel Wallace. Unable to reason with her father, she storms out. As Imogen rides to clear her head, an strange mist swirls around her. A child’s eerie voice and a man’s ghostly hand send her fleeing in panic. A branch hits her across the forehead, and she falls from her horse, blacking out as her head hits the ground. When she awakens the next day, she finds everyone is ignoring her as punishment for her anger. The only person she has for company is Dougal Weston, her new tutor. Even though he is very aloof, she can’t help being attracted to him. What will he think of her when she tells him she has started seeing ghosts? THE MISTS OF MIDNIGHT is a wonderful book, full of surprises, mystery and romance. The story is complex, and the way it unfolds is ingenious. It takes some time to really get to know the main characters, but it’s worth the wait. Imogen and Dougal are both selfless, loving characters, willing to do anything for each other, and deserve the happy ending they get. This Regency romance with its paranormal twist is an emotional, satisfying read.
