| Lydia Pisani had never really taken care of things in her life, but when a tragic auto accident claims the life of her husband Vic she is forced to take all responsibility for her home and her children. Her 7-year-old daughter Angela had to have a tonsillectomy. Lydia brings her home from the hospital and makes her comfortable on the couch. Angela falls asleep and dreams the day away. Lydia then remembers that she has to pick her toddler Mark up from Preschool. With her mind and heart thinking only of Angela’s need for rest, Lydia sets aside her reasoning and leaves Angela sleeping on the couch. Upon her arrival home, Lydia finds that Angela has had a terrible accident and is being transported by ambulance back to the hospital. She is frantic with worry and guilt. She is soon approached by an officer who takes Lydia to the police station. Immediately Angela is taken to a shelter until Lydia goes to court. Will she be able to get Angela back or is Angela doomed to slip through the cracks of the legal system.
Momentary Lapse by Laurie Larsen is a story so true to life that is it scary. Everything that family goes through is so real and happens everyday in the world. You feel Lydia’s pain and self guilt for her stupid mistakes and you understand Angela’s feelings of abandonment. Lydia’s in-laws should have a story all of their own. The conniving and manipulating that goes on in this story is so typical of mother-in-laws. But amidst the tragedy comes happiness in the form of our men in blue. How will Lydia turn this horrible misfortune into a happy ending? I recommend this story to all who cry at weddings and coo at newborn babies.
