| Melane is the only one of four given the task of finding the Selams who is successful. Her world of Cibrac has had no Selams/males for over five generations. The council has decided that, without them, their society won’t survive the attacks of the Kibra who want to steal their women. She meets Wylan, King of the Selams but, as often happens, the powerful man resists involvement with an equally strong woman.
Jewel Adams does an excellent job building a world with distinct groups of people. Each has a different view of how people should mate and propagate the species. The women of Cibrac use artificial insemination, producing only girls. The people of Moondock and Windward do it the old fashioned way but have distinctly different views about how to choose a mate. The Kibra have no women except those they steal from others. And then it gets even more interesting! Into this mix put Melane, a woman who’s never even seen a man falling in love with Wylan, a man who seems unable to get over his hesitation to bond with her no matter how he feels. Add a few villains, a Kaymog mount as loyal as a puppy but the size of a wooly mammoth, Wylan’s mother Tarra and other friends and fiends to give us an excellent romance. Ms. Jewel gives us suspense, love, an excellent storyline, humor, great dialogue. I think Melane scares the wits out of Wylan sometimes. Seems every time he starts to weaken and admit his love he goes running off to do some useless task to keep him away from her. This tale is just fun and great entertainment.
