I shall start off by saying that I LOVED this book! This story by England had that ephemeral special something that grabs at the reader and makes a story truly enjoyable. Jordhal was a typical prince -- brave, charming, charismatic, and oh-so-sexy. But he's made complex by prejudices and ignorance that endangers the life of the heroine and threatens to damage their relationship irrevocably. Lanai was also memorable with her child-like naïveté and desire to do everything possible to help her mate. It was a pleasure to watch her grow from a nearly non-human being to something more than a mere tool. The only downside to her characterisation is that she does not seem to be more than a "mate" to Jordhal and a person completely separate from him -- but this does not detract from the story and could be in fact considered as part of the plot. The two protagonists obviously enjoy each other a great deal and the readers will also be swept up in their incredible chemistry and the tender eroticism of their lovemaking. The plot of the story was also well-planned out, but could have better pacing as it suffered slightly in places. Political intrigue, rebels, and fantasy creatures are entwined to create a truly wonderful read that will keep you at the edge of your seat and tug at your heartstrings.
