| The small town of Nicodemous, Kansas was not more than a few stores and a church, so totally not like New Orleans and it's lifestyle. Lilly Verdue stepped off the wagon and looked across the town. How could her brother-in-law allow his children to live like this! It had been years since Lilly had seen Ezekiel Harban, almost 17 years to be exact. But due to circumstances in New Orleans, Lilly was forced to come to this God-forsaken place. Her only hope was that she could find a way to California and away from the past.
Ezekiel Harban was a hardworking man who did what he could to raise his girls after his sweet Jennie passed on. Though Lilly was his Jennie's only sister, he could not forget how she refused to come out when Jennie was so sick. What she was doing here in Kansas now was anyone's guess… and would she try to take Jennie's girls with her when she moved on? The Harban girls, Jerna the oldest, and the twins Truth and Grace had been through so much, yet there was a deep secret that would change the girls, one that would never make them the same again or would it? The story gives us a glimpse of each girl, each a different soul in their own right and each with strong convictions of what and how they will survive in their lives. Yet, the one who seems to be the strongest is Jerna. Her devotion to one Thomas Grayson, who is in the army, is what makes the story seem to grab the reader and one keeps reading to see if indeed her happiness is there. Lilly is just a diversion to the real story but does add to the secret that is kept. I'm not telling… that would totally give the story away, but I will say that it's an interesting book and worth your time.
