| It's the day before Christmas Eve in 1943 and Tom Everett's plane is shot down somewhere over France. His beautiful and very pregnant wife, Gwen is devastated when she receives the cablegram telling her that her beloved Tom's aircraft has gone down behind enemy lines. Being a pessimist, she can't muster up the hope to believe that he will make it home alive-in time for Christmas and the birth of their baby. By some miracle, Tom is the only surviving member of his crew, and in trying to elude the German army, finds a farmhouse and an angelic woman who tends to his wounds and develops a plan to get him home again. Meanwhile, back in England Tom's friends and a darling old neighbor, Mrs. Hibbert, encourage Gwen to keep up the faith. Gwen, trying to cling to the belief that Tom will somehow come back to her, visits the local church to pray for his safe return. There she meets a stranger who will come to play a big part in her life.
My Only Wish by Catherine Snodgrass is a tense, heart-warming story of a couple in love during World War II. The book hooked me from the very beginning and I couldn't put it down until I read the very last line. Although I had tears streaming down my cheeks at the end, I managed to dry my eyes and add Catherine Snodgrass to my list of favorite authors. My only wish is that she keeps on writing!
