After the death of his wife, Aaron King and his son, Samuel, move to Sylvan to start over. Aaron believes that leaving their Mennonite community will help Sam. Sam stopped speaking after his mother's death. The move proves to be trying for both father and son due in large part to the cultural differences between the Mennonite society and the surrounding secular community.

Nathaniel "Happy" Jefferson always has a smile on his face and often dances to a song that only he can hear. Nathaniel is known as the ranch playboy. He's not really; he's just kissing a lot of frogs while waiting for his prince. Nathaniel is drawn to Aaron and Sam. They are both so sad and he wants nothing more than to make things right for them. Will Nathaniel's carefree ways be enough to heal father and son?

Nathaniel is a sweet story of finding love when and where you least expect it. Aaron and Nathaniel were attracted to one another but skirted around their feelings for various issues. Nathaniel might appear to always be happy go lucky but he's as insecure and unsure when it comes to love as the rest of us. In this relationship he's skittish, which is contradictory to his outgoing personality. Aaron admits to having feelings for other men in the past that he ignored. Now that he's left his strict religious sect, he's more than willing to jump head first. Aaron and Nathaniel balanced each other out in surprising ways.

When I chose this book, I was interested in how Ms. Irving was going to treat Aaron's isolationism that he experienced growing up in a Mennonite community and how it would affect Aaron and Nathaniel's relationship. I'm pleased that other than some cute miscues, it was not a stumbling block. Ms. Irving penned a great story that you will want to read again and again.
