| What a delightful book! Although the book is full of conflict and some emotional agony, this is a feel-good story which pairs a lonely 38-year-old rancher named Jordan McIntyre with a 33-year-old marine biologist, Julie Reagan, who is studying sea lions. The Lazy M Ranch has been in Jordan’s family for several generations and is large, isolated, and further north than Julie lives.
I really enjoyed the fact that these two people were not ‘twenty-something.’ Even though still young by my age group, this mid-thirties couple-to-be had already made a mark on the world and obtained success in society’s eyes; however, each one of them has found something missing in life. Both want a child; each wants to be a parent, but neither wants to get married. Prior experiences for them have soured the mythical illusion of wedded bliss. Jordan and Julie are set in their ways and are not very flexible. This shows up throughout the book. I truly enjoyed reading this novel; it has many different secondary characters and various previous actions which were responsible for the circumstances they all were in at the time. Jordan and his ranch foreman Cam, and Liz (who is just there all the time) have been friends since a young age. However, all is not as it seems, and Maggie, Cam’s wife, and Julie are aware that something is wrong in British Columbia. The men are adamant that the women are wrong and that their hate for Liz is ungrounded! The secrets of the occupants of The Lazy M Ranch are numerous. As you can tell, I absolutely loved this work by Ms. Carol McPhee. She is a great story teller and her mind allows her incredible leeway to not only create a wonderful narrative but to also keep the reader’s interest throughout. I recommend this book and invite you to read this work as soon as possible. You will not be disappointed!
