| David's life is going well. He's got a three year contract to act in the Shakespeare Festival, good friends, his dogs and his own place. Then the bottom falls out. Three years ago he had a relationship with unprotected sex. The ex boyfriend calls to tell him he's HIV positive. His best friend Jason is his lifeline through the testing and waiting. Midnight calls, support and some revelations between the two make them both hope even more that they're not positive.
Alix Bekins does a great job sensitively writing about the emotional roller coaster David goes through. Jason is well developed as a friend, comrade and a man having the potential for so much more in David's life. Their conversations go deeply into what they both are and have experienced as people. But there's teasing, playing, easy camaraderie too that's only present between people who are really friends and know each other well. I think Ms. Bekins storyline is excellent. The fears, grieving, loving, sharing are so realistic that the two guys come alive and are easy to relate to. When they start to become friends with benefits it's done well. It feels like they're doing more than just using one another to pass the time so David can deal with his terror at finding out he may be dying. I found this to be a great read.
