| Elisabeth Bathory was an actual historical personage, a bloodlusting Countess of the 17th century in the region which became Romania, rumoured to have been a female Dracula. Known to have misplaced dozens of young girls sent to her for tutelage in the feminine arts by their noble families, Elisabeth was strongly suspected of bathing in virgins’ blood to maintain her own youthful countenance, and of practicing dark arts in dungeons to rival the worst horrors imaginable. In 1608 she had been captured, and imprisoned by being walled up. Five years later, she commended her spirit to eternity, commanding herself to return.
Now the Countess is ready to return and wreak havoc of her own design on the modern world. Arrayed against her will be the chosen of Anima Mundi, a millennial-old Order of mortals who strive to bring Light against Darkness, to fight evil with good. Members do not elect to join, but are chosen by universal forces beyond their control. Not all survive the initiation testing. Among those who are called to combat the evil Countess are Adam Bell, a Spokane Native American; Cat, a psychic to whom Adam has a spiritual and emotional magnetic attraction; and Martin Ludlum, the long-time hunter of the Order who may find this battle to be his final one as a living mortal.
