| Carla Montgomery is a junior interior designer in a major architectural firm in Manhattan. By default she has just received her first major commission, a country club community. The representative of the company in charge, Julian Swann, is the son-in-law of the CEO, and a notorious womanizer. Carla falls for him, believing his tale that he is separated. She lost her mother the year before, and found out that she really did not know much about her at all, she hasn’t even been able to return to her beloved home in Montauk. The last thing she needs now is someone else with a secret life. She is devastated by the news that Julian has never been separated, but goes on with her life, with the help of her friends. Her boss Anna sends her on a cruise of the Caribbean in the place of Paul her husband, a travel agent who has had a mild heart attack. Carla meets two people who help her heal her broken heart, an elderly woman named Jane Bill, and the Captain of the ship, Erik Andreassen. Erik and Carla quickly fall in love, but Carla is unable to trust her feelings, but the two try to work through the problems to find each other.
This book has so much going on it is impossible to include all the aspects of the plot here. This is a wonderful story of a woman trying to recover from the loss of a parent, and later the loss of love. Carla is remarkably resilient, considering the blows that life has thrown at her. She is also remarkably lucky in the people in her life. Her friends are steadfast, as are her mother’s friends. The characters of Jane Bill and Sister Joan Marion are particularly vividly unusual women. The supporting characters really make the book. The characters of Julian and Erik couldn’t be more different, one is a good looking manipulator, who finds himself in love by accident, the other a steady honest character, surprised to find himself in love for the first time. This is a really involving book that you won’t be able to put down.
