Imagine the worst slums ever and then double it to give yourself some idea of the kind of existence Cyani was thrown into for her "crime" of self defense. On the mission that may free her from the bonds put on her by the ruling Sister of her planet she meets Soren. He‘s been in captivity for fourteen years because his body secrets a substance people are willing to give anything for. The two join forces to escape but must battle their inner turmoil as well as the world around them to survive and, perhaps, even find a better life than they had before.

Jess Granger has crafted a thrilling novel that speaks well of what some will do to survive injustice. This could be a sad, futuristic view of life. Instead it's more of a heroic type of battle between good and evil. And not just the evil around the characters. Sometimes it's the evil inside trying to gain control, instilled by those who have tried to beat humanity out of them.

This is a real classic type of story with characters who will bring tears to your eyes at times. No matter how sad their plight may be Soren and Cyani have others to help lighten their load and their heart. Vicca the part cat, part dog, part mutt is priceless as is a small disc-like computer whose sense of humor is priceless. Each player whether two legged, four legged or robotic adds something to the story that makes them an integral part of the whole.

Scenarios are built so well that we're easily able to picture futuristic spacecraft and long for some of the amenities they offer. When Soren and Cyani are in a tight spot we can almost feel the squeeze. This book is excellent as a first novel. It looks like there may be a sequel that I'll look forward to reading from this gifted author.
