| Every twenty-five years a nightmarish creature is hatched and kills before it reproduces. The Huntsmen are charged with eliminating the terrible creatures, hopefully before they are killed themselves. The last creature to terrorize Phoenix killed Gillian’s mother, and her father has been imprisoned ever since for the murder. Gillian a psychologist and authority on urban legends has dedicated her life to freeing him, especially now that he has cancer and possibly not too much longer to live. Nick, a T.V. news cameraman, is the current Huntsman, the last monster also wiped out his family, and the Ancients designated him as the next defender of Phoenix. It was inevitable that the two meet, and they join forces to hunt a monster and fall in love.
This novel is a definite page-turner and I could not put it down. The suspense alone will keep you on the edge of your seat and the love story is equally engrossing. Gillian and Nick are two very determined people who work even better as a team than alone. They both have very personal reasons to want to exterminate Cadamus, but while Nick is a believer in the Ancients and what they have taught him, Gillian is more skeptical. After all, the Ancients did not ensure that she was raised to believe as Nick was. She was shuffled around the foster system after the death of her mother and the arrest of her father. That leads to a bit of conflict that adds spice to both the story and their romance. The plot is fast moving and the dialogue is very well written. The descriptions are so vivid that I could picture every location and creature involved in the story. The author also leaves a hint of another story in the future; that is something to look forward to.
