Angelica Morgan and Lucas Carstairs were in love in 1700, wanted to be married. Her father, a vile man, killed her to prevent it. Lucas was offered eternal life as a vampire by Lord Elston. First thing he did was to kill her father. For the next three hundred years he sought a reincarnation of Angelica. He thinks he’s found her when Lord Elston comes back into their lives, determined to prevent their future together.

Carrie Destler writes a great romantic love story with some suspense thrown in. Lucas’ and Angelica’s characters are well done, past and present. Ms. Destler gives Lucas the ability to share all his memories of Angelica with her. That’s a unique little vampire trait.

I can’t decide who the worst villain is. It could be Matthias Morgan who kills his own daughter or Lord Elston who wants Lucas for a son, wants him to love only the one who turned him. I think it’s a toss up. They’re both vile creatures, guess it’s up to the reader to decide if one is worse or whether they’re cut from the same despicable cloth.

The suspense is well done as Detective Jack Rogan tries to track down a serial killer. Lucas is the prime suspect but my heart thinks it can’t be him all along. Other secondary characters add some fun to the story. Leron and Marlin just want a spot to enjoy some borrowed drugs. They’re higher than a kite when they find a body. Jenni and Marcy who pick up Lucas in a bar are funny until Marcy becomes a victim and Jenni helps point the finger at Lucas.

The storyline is well built with great little suspense scenarios at the haunted house, the crime scenes and at Angelica’s home. There are several surprises that come with the power of seeing them in our mind’s eye due to Ms. Destler’s great use of words. This was a great read.
