| For Thomas Hart and his daughter, cabaret singer Victoria "Torey," life has been a series of tragedies recently. His business burned followed the next year by the death of his wife. Now the home that held all the family treasures and memories has been burned to the ground. Arson investigator Lt. Jack Stevens has suspected Thomas since the first fire but has never been able to prove it. Jack's desire to solve the crime is complicated by his intense attraction to Torey.
Lynnette Hallberg pens an exciting thriller. We know Thomas didn't do it as we follow the villain and get a glimpse into his demented mind. Sometimes the reader would just like to shake Jack as time and again his own emotions interfere with his picking up on clues. It's frustrating as we see him wanting to get Thomas for the crime when we know he's innocent. His character is salvaged in my mind by the intensity of his emotions where Torey is involved. He's like a teenager in some ways as he pines after her while still trying to prove her father is guilty. Jack and the villain have both had situations with their mothers that have affected their lives. Some of the players, like Torey, are wise beyond their years even if their desires do control them where love is concerned. Ms. Hallberg blends all of the emotions felt by the characters into a package of situations that drive the book. This tale has a sense of doom overlaying it as we follow the villain. But there's also a sense of hope as good people work to right wrongs from the past. This is a great read.
