Brett doesn’t know what to think or do when he finds out his partner is pregnant. His mother and stepfather haven’t exactly been role models for a good relationship or raising a child. Sarah wants to make the best life she can for the baby and the man she loves. When she quits her job and they move to the country from Sidney she looses her circle of support and life becomes more difficult. Post partum depression seems to be the last straw in the relationship.

Rebecca James takes on a challenging task by writing about the realities of humanity without the glossy coating that fiction and movies usually paint over it all. Brett and Sarah are well characterized as two people who start out their relationship with different goals. She’s in love and wants babies, marriage and forever. He thinks she’s great but doesn't see himself in love. With an expectation that it can't last he refuses to commit to monogamy. There are times when Brett just seems like such a self serving, selfish man that he’s especially aggravating. Other times he seems like he may be growing into the relationship.

The author does make an excellent point, I think, in showing that even troubled relationships can survive if not torpedoed by someone like Claudia. This is definitely not your everyday romance novel. It’s too much like real life for an escape from reality. The characters will either make you want to thank the gods for your luck or commiserate with their misery!
