Victor Kane's trial for the murder of a local reporter is drawing close. His daughter Talia is suffering nightly nightmares of losing her father while Lucas, her mate, is anxious over the possible revelations that may occur during the course of the trial. Victor's lover, Caroline, has recovered from the fire that nearly destroyed her condo, and is enjoying her three-month-old son Alexander, Victor's child. But anxieties over the upcoming trial are keeping her awake, as is the push to regain memories of the night her son was born, and to learn details of Neil, who had disappeared that night.

The case seems open-and-shut to the state and no one is seeking further evidence, so it is up to those in Victor's pack to discover the truth and then decide whether to reveal or conceal it. Some will have to recover their memories first. In the meantime, the tension for everyone involved is ratcheted up almost to exhausting levels.

Many of the lead characters in this series are shifters/wolves and that lends an additional series of interconnecting threads throughout the story line. Ms. Cole does well to keep the intertwined characters and plot lines straight, for this is a complex series. Night Watchers is the third in a series, and although Audra Cole delves a good deal into the background of the story, referring to the earlier books, I still feel this is better read in order as a series. The two earlier books are Night Canids and Shadows in the Night.
