| Marianne Nobel, as paid companion to the widowed Mrs. Middleton, has often the not-so-enjoyable experience to be used as middle woman (instead of middleman, naturally), to draw interesting individuals into her employers net of curiosity. Her latest attempted conquest puts Marianne into an uncomfortable position as she finds Mr. Rivers very handsome herself.
Jerome Rivers finds his interest piqued by the serene beauty of Miss Nobel. Discovering that she has many of the same interests as he himself, is so much more of a lady than her Mrs. Middleton could ever hope to be, he experiences the desire to protect and shelter her increasing daily within his soul. Intrigue, secrets, lies, deceit; the joy and satisfaction the two share in their relationship will be disrupted by individuals in their lives who are not above attempting murder to get just what they want. Thank goodness Marianne is such a strong character; she carries wonderfully the strength in this story. I applauded Jerome wholeheartedly for having the gumption to defy social norm and woo Marianne into marriage. Wonderful story!
