Five years after her fiancé slept with her sister, Lady Madeline Armbrest found out the hard way that he had returned to their home area. Madeline had never gotten over the devastation of her sister Lucinda telling her how Oscar had taken advantage of her and, not only taken her virginity but also left her with child. She had neither seen nor heard from him again until she visited a friend who had a house that Madeline desperately needed to borrow for a while. Her school, Select Seminary, for the training of young ladies, had been opened two weeks. Since Lucinda owned the house she was living in, she would want it back. Madeline had to find housing for her staff and her six young charges.

Squire Oscar Cavendish had spent the last five years trying to clear his name and find the son Lucinda said she gave up to a fondling home. She refused to tell him where he was. Oscar could not find her or his brother, Horatio, who could help clear his name and find his son. One glimpse of Lady Madeline proved that he had never gotten over his love for her. This made him more determined than ever to clear his name. The fact that he, too, needed to borrow Marchioness Dudley’s house led to the immediate confrontation with his one true love.

It has been a while since I read a Regency romance and this author, Ms. Renee Spencer, has written such a great book that it reminded me why I love this genre. Spencer has a great use of words and characterizations to excite her readers and depict the agony caused by this great tragedy from which the two main characters never recovered. The story was quite hilarious at times as well as dramatic.

The children united to work with the Marchioness in a wonderfully composed storyline which was hard to put down. I was enthralled with the plot and the outcome. The ending was, while expected, not developed in an expected manner. I loved this story and highly recommend it to others.
