| Catherine Campbell had spent her younger years taking care of her father after her mother's death. Now at forty years-old and the town's school mistress Catherine is what others would consider a spinster until a man comes into her life. True, Luke Matthews is a rugged cowboy and just happened to ride into town that day with the cattle drive, yet things happen for a reason. Was it was fate that made Catherine run into the street to try to save that child from the runaway bull? Or was it a chance for Luke to grab Catherine in the nick of time and carry her off to safety? The rescue did not go unnoticed by her ever watchful father. Just the thought of this handsome stranger coming to her rescue was something that Catherine couldn't nor wouldn't forget.
Whatever one wants to think, it was the beginning of something that not even Catherine was sure of. Though she had gentlemen callers in the past it was always her father, the sheriff, who had a way of scaring them off. Luke on the other hand was not one to be scared off. He had found someone he was truly interested in and hoped she felt the some way about him. Catherine at first tried to avoid him and even explained she was too old but that didn't seem to stop Luke. He was surprised to find out that she ws still a miss and more delighted to think he would be seeing her again, even if her father didn't know about it. It wasn't until her good friends Claire and Emmett Sanders- two of her former students decided to play match-maker that romance finally bloomed. The young couple were only to happy to help the cowboy and their best friend find the happiness they had. Giving Luke a job on their ranch was the perfect way to have Catherine and him meet and still keep it from the Sheriff. Even then there are a few stones that have to be crossed before Catherine finds out she'll settle for nothing less that love I enjoyed this novel. Catherine is much like a woman of this era as she learns that there are other avenues in life and it's time to explore them. I love western romances and enjoy the fact that not all the female leads have to be young. Bravo Ms. Mills for giving us an older lead character.
