| Joshua Forrester has spent twenty years grieving for his wife who was killed by a drunken driver during the Christmas holidays. His sister has raised his two sons while his real estate business became his life. When he walks out of the house one morning and steps into 1890 he finds a world he's not prepared for. Even more surprising is his reaction to Adeline Benjamin, owner of the local mercantile.
Barbara Goodwin pens another wonderful tale in this series. Joshua grows on us as his obsessive nature has to deal with the slower pace of the times. He comes into his own as a man of courage and conviction after some rough beginnings. Addie is a modern woman for the times in many ways. As a business owner and parent to her two young nieces who lost their parents in an accident she's outspoken and as brave as any woman of the times. The nasty Sheriff George Hall turns into a possessive and cruel man when he sees he has competition for Addie's affection. Seems jealousy turns him into a hateful and vindictive man who doesn't deserve the star he wears on his chest. The contrast between the slower pace, cleaner air, stricter morality of the day versus the twenty-first century is well done. Almost makes the reader wish we were able to go back in time! But, like Joshua, most of us would probably miss the conveniences of our modern world. What will he choose when confronted with the potential to return to his own time? He has so much to lose if he leaves Addie, Mary, Evie and people whose respect he's earned. Ms. Goodwin makes this an excellent read and leaves the reader to wonder what we might do if in Joshua's or Addie's shoes.
