Sergeant Justin Harrison, Homicide, San Diego, just returned to the job after a six months recovering from a bullet wound that very nearly ended his life. Justin resents that his partner of ten years, Alan Simmons, believes he isn’t ready. It is rotten luck the first case they pull is the execution style murder of a Boston vice cop. Justin was stunned by his attraction to the beauty who’d discovered the body. The dead policeman had been her murdered fiancé’s partner, but Paige hadn’t seen Lee in the three years since. Now the killer is stalking Paige. Is Justin’s injury healed well enough to protect her? Could he remain objective despite his enchantment with the only woman he could ever love?

Not Without Risk is a gripping suspense, rife with raging sexual passion and spellbinding intrigue. It’s an exciting saga of irresistible love flourishing and floundering under stress of the unknown but very real and imminent threat of circumstances that just don’t add up in Justin’s mind; he knows something is missing, lingering just beyond his grasp in the fringes of his memory. This is a very well written, fast paced drama with characters so well developed they come alive. My heart ached for Justin who doesn’t believe in love, but stepped into a puddle of it that’s more than stuck to his shoes and for Paige with all her guilt over whether she could have done something to prevent the murder of her fiancé. Her phobia of relationships with cops clouds her realization that she has grown into a powerful, professional woman of strength and is no longer the malleable, easily manipulated, naive girl she’d been. As long as the killer doesn’t notice the difference in her, Paige and Justin might just be able to save each other. An undercurrent of excitement buzzes throughout from the first page until long after the book is done. This one is a must read!
