| In San Diego, a madman is targeting photographer Paige Conroy after an old friend calls her and she discovers him dead in his hotel room. Sergeant Justin Harrison has just returned to active duty after six months recovering from a gunshot. Being a cop is not just a job for Justin, it's who he is. A past relationship leaves Paige avoiding police officers even if they are as handsome as Sergeant Harrison. So while Justin tries to catch the murderer who is terrorizing her, Paige tries to guard her heart from the dedicated homicide detective. Justin is so busy protecting Paige that he forgets to guard his own heart and she easily slips in. So if he can catch a killer perhaps they can have a future together.
I enjoyed this well-written, subtle, suspense novel. This mystery contained a few predictable moments but the solid characterization made up for that. The couple was so endearingly realistic. I loved how in control Paige was even when control was being taken from her. She is a strong female lead. Justin is a fabulous alpha male who brings out my protective instincts. The hero and heroine were so appealing and so obviously made for one another. I liked the fact that the romantic issues added to the intensity of the mystery itself. The plot was well-paced and the dialogue and character interaction was so believable. I did find the mystery was a little too subtle for my tastes as I prefer my romantic suspenses to be a little more interactive, a little more of a whodunit. The love scenes are sensual and used to move the story along. This was such a romantic, adventurous, thrilling read. This was a skillful suspense story with a fantastic ending. I recommend this be added to the must-read lists of suspense fans, as well as contemporary romance readers who enjoy spine-tingling situations.
