| Charlotte Hughes has a real winner in her second installment of the Kate Holly Series. This sassy and sensitive psychologist is about to get evicted from her office after blowing up her office with nitroglycerine in book one. She could share office space with an old boyfriend, but...
She's busy dealing with transgender issues and multiple personalities in her patients. She's into marriage counseling with firefighter Jay, the love of her life, who she only divorced by accident. She's afraid he'll die running into a fire; he thinks her loony clients pose a risk. Their fears are justified, but let's hope they are not insurmountable. This sequel to What Looks Like Crazy is a hoot all by itself. The main characters are likable, if offbeat. Mona Epps, Kate's best friend and assistant, is an off-kilter delight. She's not a nurse, she just plays one while she takes phone calls and tries to keep a boyfriend interested. Kate's mother Dixie and aunt Trixie deal in Junque and familial interference. Plus-sized identical twins, they are a force to be reckoned with. Trixie even dates one of Kate's clients; will she marry the con man before here niece can cure him? A kindly old lady makes a dog happy with marijuana. Silly, yet sensitive, the supporting characters add real texture to 32-year-old Kate's life. Though clever and often hysterically funny, author Hughes is sympathetic and understanding of the psychological foibles she describes. The suspense is logical and real, but it takes a back seat to the psychological disorders and disarray of Kate's life. We can only hope Kate continues to tempt danger -- and dementia -- in future series volumes. This is fun, fun, fun from beginning to end.
