| Onan has been receiving letters around Christmas time for 200 years from his ex-lover Elizabeth. She's been begging him to forgive her for the one indiscretion she had when she first became a vampire. Onan has not been able to, because she cheated on him with another vampire and he felt like his heart was ripped out when he found out. He wants nothing to do with her; at least that's what he tells himself. Then there are the days that he longs for her touch again, and he can almost imagine her back. It's been 200 years, maybe after all this time he should think about giving her another chance…
Hot Toddy 7: Blood and Soul: Nutcracker is a very short story that still manages to make you care about what happens to the characters. Onan is a side character in the other Blood and Soul books, so you already feel like you know him a little bit. Elizabeth has been trying to gain his forgiveness for over 200 years, and you begin to feel a little sorry for her. I had a couple problems with this one, and it's probably just a personal thing. I couldn't believe that Elizabeth wasn't a little angry at Onan. He was hard and unbending for 200 years, and then just like that he forgives her and all is right with the world. What about what he was doing those 200 years? If he was so hurt, why didn't he see her sooner? Why see other women? I didn't care for the fact that she basically took all the blame and let Onan off the hook. Even though it is short and sweet, you get to know the characters enough to be just a little mad for Elizabeth's sake, which is part of the reason I like this story. When they do get together, the fireworks go off and the sex is explosive. Great short story, if you are looking for a quick read that moves fast, this is the one for you.
