| This book consists of a trio of unrelated short stories; however, that is not a bad thing. Each individual story accounts the anecdote of one lady in a certain set of circumstances.
“I Imagine Walking” speaks of a married-for-years wife, Danielle, who has been mentally and emotionally abandoned by her husband, Rick. They have no children and Rick works constantly. Danielle looked upon this four-month assignment in Malta as a chance to reconnect with her husband; however, a war buddy, Marcus, with whom they are staying, claimed all Rick’s time. He seemed to be even less aware of his wife than he did while they were home. Marcus’s neighbor, Giovanna, aware of Danielle’s abandonment, arranged for her brother, Gregorio, to meet her. He needed help rebuilding his estate home; would Danielle come to his rescue?. Katsuko had, for the past 12 years, been a geisha, sold to Okasan because her parents needed funds, in “An Unusual Danna.” Okasan was the mother of the house of geisha girls and Katsuko was her most prosperous geisha. However, Katsuko wanted out; a favorite client paid off her debt to Okasan, but she still needed more before she could support herself. A mystery man (danna) began to send her kimono gifts, one each month. Where would this lead? Nora Beck was a widow with a small child, Anne, to support; her shepherd husband had left her with a bunch of sheep, but no money. In “The Odyssey,” Nora, an unpublished poet, walked all day and slept outside, to reach William Wadsworth, a 61 year old poet who helped her. She lived so far away from anything (Wast Water) that, when Joseph Cavanaugh showed up at her home, he realized how isolated she really was! Sine Nora had so much work to do, how would he ever get a chance to talk with her? Ms. Jennifer Mueller packed so much “story” into so few words, and the work flowed so well, it would be impossible for a reader to not enjoy this book. I highly recommend it!
