Gabe Brennan is on his way home after his shift at the fire station. As a paramedic, he responds instantly when he sees an accident happen right in front of him. When the victim turns out to be Carly, the very pregnant, recently divorced sister of his friend Brandon, he does everything for her, above and beyond his training. Gabe had always wanted to be with Carly but first came the rule about not messing with your best friend's sister. Then, after Brandon had turned his back on Gabe, they had drifted apart. Now, he still wanted her, another man's baby and all, if they could just put the past behind them and move on.

This is book 1 of the series "First Responders." The first meeting is a bit contrived, I mean, what are the odds of a paramedic being behind someone he knows just when there is an accident? But the rest of the book is pure emotion and real. He wants her but thinks the past is standing between them and she needs time to get used to being a single mother. She wants him but doesn't understand why he stopped being part of their lives. I like the way they keep trying to understand the other, and the fact that they do try to talk to each other. It's not one of those books where the great conflict could be settled if the couple just had a conversation. I like the real emotions and the adult way the characters interact. Very well done.
