Ava Brisbane had no idea what fate had in store for her when she was caught out after dark. Saved from vampires by a stranger, Ava awakes to find a big ugly dog staring at her and an incredibly sexy shifter who claims to be her mate. Diskant Black is the omega of the NY shifters. He is able to shift into any form and holds the final authority over all the packs. After he saves a small human from vampires, Diskant realizes that he has found his mate. Now he just has to convince her of that, and at the same time, protect his people from fanatics who wish to exterminate them.

This is an exciting, well-crafted story that feels familiar yet fresh and new at the same time. The author paints a vivid picture of the world in which Diskant and Ava live. She creates a complex plot that branches off in several directions. Her shifters possess many talents and their culture comes alive. Although the story revolves around Diskant and Ava, there are many intriguing secondary characters. Sensuality pervades the the entire book. The mating and bloodbonding scenes are very creatively written and extremely erotic. Diskant and Ava are unable to keep their hands off each other and that leads to some interesting encounters. There is fast-paced action, some violence and a few surprises in this one. Treachery, betrayal and unexpected allies are all found here. Vampires, mages and fanatics, known as Shepards, add interest and dimension to the plot. This is clearly the beginning of a series and there are several subplots that are left unfinished. I was very impressed by not only this story but also the set up for the ones to follow. This was an enjoyable read and I think that if you love shifters then this one is destined to become a favorite.
