Karina Vadislav rode the orphans’ train in August 1868. This ten-year-old made a pack with her five friends they would meet in ten years in Boston. After her adoptive mother was killed, her uncle reluctantly took her because his sister had left all her money to Karina. Uncle Patrick Baker spent the past years raping and beating this young woman. He was evil and she had no one to help her until Benjamin Sawyer married her to keep her “uncle” from further abuse. Doc Holliday was witness to the marriage.

Patrick joined forces with three Hensley brothers who had tracked Benjamin Sawyer with the intention of beating him for the death of their mother. The youngest brother, Richard, solicited Doc Holliday’s help when he discovered the others’ intention of killing Sawyer. The ultimate chase of the brothers and uncle of the couple, the couple’s intentions of keeping the marriage “in name only” and the rushed travel of the younger Hensley and Doc Holliday became the focus of this lively tale of true love.

Once again, Rebecca Goings has penned a winner. You can always be confident you are getting more than your money’s worth when you pick up a Goings novel. I have read all her historicals as well as some others and have never been disappointed. Her ability to create a story revolving around a myriad of people and places is uncanny. Usually when there are so many characters or places to travel, it gets confusing to the plot. This has never been the case with a Goings book.

Her main characters are not without heartache or comedic relief. They are, however, some of her best. The sensuality of this story is beautifully written and poignant. The book is fast paced and easily read. It was hard for me to put it down. The intimacy was only a part of this great book. Her cast was so realistic that it seemed as if I was in the midst of the personal actions.

I highly recommend this book. It’s a great read. Just wish I could give it higher ratings.
