Following the murder of her husband, Maggie McGuire moved, obtained another nursing job, and put her life together. When her brakes fail and her car goes down an embankment, the new Chief of Police, Mike Brandt, rescues her. Then her son, a cop working for Mike Brandt, is severely injured and not expected to live, and Mike begins investigating the accidents and attacks on Maggie and her three children. Intrigued and drawn to Mike, Maggie resolves to have nothing to do with another cop, especially since a detective investigating her husband's murder went to great lengths to prove her guilt. She barely tolerates Mike's investigation of they come to know to be attempts on her entire family. Complicating the situation is Maggie's history of alcoholism and, despite her claim she no longer uses, the evidence suggesting otherwise. Will Chief Brandt learn the identity of the would-be-killer of Maggie and her family before it's too late?

This well-written book kept me reading from the first page to the last. The characters are well done, interesting and varied. Maggie and Mike both have personal issues that get in the way of their romance. Because a detective harassed her after her husband's death, Maggie distrusts all cops, while Mike's former marriage to a money-grubbing nurse causes him to believe all nurses to be the same. The secondary characters are also well-drawn, with each one of Maggie's children being completely individual, with their own abilities and faults. The mystery is intriguing from the start and the author keeps the reader in suspense as to the identity of the truly evil person who wants to end Maggie's life and that of her children. This villain doesn't have one redeeming quality, and in this case, it works for me. The danger for Maggie and her children mounts with each page, as does the pull between Maggie and Mike, culminating in an explosive finale.

I loved this book, couldn't put it down, and read it in one sitting. I anxiously await the next one by this author.
