| D’Anne Palmer is two months into widowhood. Her husband Reese died during sex,
leaving her pretty much penniless. Her best friend Theresa thinks it was suicide. When D’Anne finally finds the note, she puzzles over the “money” Reese said he left. Now D’Anne is pretty much stranded, far from her California home.
To make it back to her grown sons and former life, D’Anne transports Tyler White, a used-to-be big name in country music, and his band on tour in her RV. Tyler will pay for her services as driver for the band. He is hoping for a comeback. And Bear, J.T. and Ricky-Bob, along with the hunky Travis, are an interesting companions helping the 46-year-old D’Anne discover herself. Tyler finds the money hidden in the RV, and D’Anne’s grown sons determine Reese had been embezzling. Someone is after the money. The RV is searched and D’Anne is even abducted. Danger and romance are spiced with guilt, Viagra, and friendships that aren’t what they seem. This is a well-written story with mature characterizations. The mystery is satisfying and well-plotted, with just the right number of clues and red herrings. The romance is both grown-up and realistic. And the background of country music gigs and management is intriguing. D’Anne’s road trip is both geographical and emotional. It is interesting to watch her connect with the other women attached to the band and to see the growth of all four musicians. Heartfelt new lyrics and those of Buddy Holly ... honky-tonk dives and glittering Las Vegas ... traditional roots meeting footloose and fancy free ... author Lynne Marshall does a skillful job contrasting and combining. This is a great read.
