Brant MacKay watched all the couples on the weekend holiday cruise and wondered why he was left out. He attended the mixers for singles, but still came away empty handed. His high-pressured job as a Beaumont, Texas firefighter made him long for just one night with someone who would take his mind off his stressful life.

Callista Quinlan had been a widow for ten months. She was on this particular cruise because she and her deceased husband, Timothy Wayne Quinlan, were supposed to celebrate together. Instead, she was here to scatter his ashes. The bartender in the little bar he entered asked Brant to follow the upset Callista and make sure she didn’t do anything stupid.

Ms. Linda Carroll-Bradd has written a great, fast-paced book about a couple who thought they each knew what was best for them. However, love comes in various ways and the outcome of this story, while a happily-ever-after, was not smooth sailing throughout. She gave her female lead (Callista) attributes that were both emotionally charged and fun to read. The characteristics of the alpha male were opposite what was expected from a strong, tough firefighter.

The supporting characters played very minor roles in this book. I liked the strength of her couple in that they carried almost the entire storyline alone. It gave great insight into the two of them. It gave us a chance to get well acquainted with them and share their sorrow and exhilarations. I recommend this book as a great read.
