| Chevy Bankes is a diabolical killer. He picks his victims at random to fit a pattern only he knows. His intentions are clear from the start. He wants to make Beth Denison's life hell. Beth knows Chevy will come after her someday, she just doesn't know when. She's been preparing herself but it's hard to get ready for someone who takes such pleasure in taunting and hurting others. Neil Sheridan has been spending much of his life lost in a bottle the past few years. Wallowing in guilt and doubt he's not sure he can be of any help when his friend Rick tells him about a serial killer with the same kind of MO as one he tried to put away in the past. As the suspense builds Neil and Beth help one another deal with the pains of the past.
Kate Brady pens a suspense that will keep you reading until the last page is turned and you say "Wow!" There's more than one villain in this tale, some more subtle than others. The victims are not only those killed but also those left to live with memories, guilt, and self doubt. As the author shapes the lives of the characters we're drawn to them in a way few writers can do so well. Neil takes all the blame for things that happened in his past but the reader will have to form their own opinion about whether he made the wrong choices or not. Beth has taken all of the guilt on her shoulders for things that could have been dealt with by her friends and family so much better. All the could haves and should haves will be up to the reader to decide. This book involved me from the first page. As we follow the killer's journey toward his meeting with Beth the lives of the three main players become something we have to empathize with and often feel anger about. Rarely has a book been so well crafted that I could relate to the characters on this level. Ms. Brady does an exceptional job with a story that will be hard to forget.
