| Noel De Servian was given Craigendan Keep by King Edward for his loyal service. During a winter storm as he rode his horse, Brishen, to find the pass to his new home, Brishen was spooked by a flock of ravens. He ran and eventually Noel was knocked off by a low hanging branch. He laid unconscious on the ground as snow covered him. Lady Skena Maclain was searching for her two children, who had wandered out into the storm. When she found Andrew and Annis, they said they had found a horse and a knight lying in the snow. They brought Noel back to their keep and nursed him back to health.
This was brutal time for Scotland. King Edward of England wanted Scotland and did not care about the people living there. The story hinted at battles fought and a lot of death. Lady Skena was a widow who was strong and much loved by her people. When her husband went to his last battle, he took all the able bodied men. So she disguised women in armor to patrol the castle walls. It was a good thing the keep was small and poor because the women had no idea how to defend it in a fight. Noel was a likeable character, he lost his parents young and was fostered out. All he wanted was a family and a home of his own. The plot was well written though long in some parts. But I did love the Scottish names and words the author threw into the story. It gave the story more of an authenticity. For some reason some words were underlined throughout the novel which was a little bit of a distraction.
