| Holly Thomas is very happy to be able to move back to Burkesville where she spent most of her summers and weekends growing up. She loves her Aunt Naomi and the people of the town and she is only a half hour away from the college at which she will be teaching. There is a new guy in town. Joe Mercer bought the local pub and is very good looking. Holly was betrayed by her ex fiancé and is reluctant to get involved with anyone. Joe is recently divorced and has a few other problems that make involvement with Holly difficult, but he can’t help himself.
The author has written a really fine story of two people falling in love in a small town, with a little suspense for added interest. Joe and Holly are very real characters with faults and previous bad experiences coloring their present outlook on life and love. The people of Burkesville are quirky in the way of small town life and their enthusiasm about the Centennial Celebration adds color to the story. Joe’s secret life brings distrust back into Holly’s world and she has to learn how to get past all of her inhibitions to let Joe explain things to her. Joe makes a lot of mistakes in his relationship with Holly, and he seems to be trying too hard to hold onto her while at the same time pushing her away. The climax of the book really makes this really engrossing love story.
