This romantically erotic and entertaining story is the first in the Shadow Dweller's Series by J. C. Wilder. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series. I loved the characters. In the beginning of the book, our heroine, Shai Jordan, is in a trendy New York City restaurant with her four best friends to celebrate her thirty-first birthday. Their relationships reminded me a little of the women from the television series Sex in the City. The friends were discussing their deepest, darkest sexual fantasies and finally coaxed shy Shai to tell hers. With his vampire senses, Valentin, twelve hundred-year old ladies man, heard every word.

Shai was a reporter for the New York Times. Her prostitute mother was murdered when Shai was six in exactly the same unusual manner as the women that had recently been murdered by a serial killer. Their bodies were completely drained of blood and their throats were ripped out after they'd had sex. There was no forensic evidence and the police were baffled.

Shai thought she was dreaming when Val appeared at her window and asked to be invited in to make love to her, just as she'd expressed was her fantasy. She invited him in and he fulfilled each of her fantasies night after night. She received flowers at work. He made love to her on the dining room table. Another night he spread rose petals all over the floor and the bed. One night he stood her in front of a mirror and had her watch as he cut her silk chemise off her with a jeweled dagger and then made love to her while they both watched in the mirror. Ms. Wilder described these scenes in explicitly delicious erotic detail. I found it quite stimulating. Val is so sophisticated and worldly while Shai is the perfect mix of innocence and eagerness that they are perfect for each other.

Shai received a mysterious call from a man who claimed to be the murderer and she met him at a busy restaurant. He told her he'd also murdered her mother and she'd belonged to him since that night. He'd been watching her and expressed anger about things he'd seen her do with Valentin. His name was Mikhail and he was playing a game with her. He said the game was 'catch me if you can'. Shai recorded the conversation but when she played the tape at the police station, Mikhail's voice was not on it.

Of course, Mikhail later tried to kill her. While she fought with him a drop of his blood got into her mouth. She turned into a vampire because Val had been sipping just a little of her blood every night when they made love. Can Val save her from Mikhail so the lovers may live happily eternal after?
