| Rachel Walker, tarot card reader, has terrifying dreams of drowning. Yet she jumps into Independence Harbor to save the life of her employer, Jack Morgan, head of the Warwick Towers Hotel. He is intrigued by the beauty of his rescuer, but does not at first realize that she is working in the hotel's Gateway Restaurant. His sister Robin manages the restaurant and has added card readings to increase business. Rachel has drawn many new customers.
Rachel feels her psychic premonitions will inevitably come to pass. She tries to distance herself from both Jack and Robin to save them. After a shooting incident in the hotel garage, Jack calls in his friend, Detective Jesse Ryan, to help investigate. The reader is told well before the main characters that someone is seeking to make Jack suffer. Rachel's psychic powers are intriguing. It would have been nice to have a few details about her mother's death and the earlier premonitions that proved correct. The relationship between Robin and Jesse is a puzzlement. Robin claims to hate him, but the sparks of attraction ignite each time they meet. Vause gives us no history to show why Robin is so antagonistic. Indeed, Robin's self-centered nature makes it difficult to understand why she considers Rachel a friend. The identity and motives of the stalker are a complete mystery until the last few pages of the book. Author Vause could have given us a few hints along the way. She writes well, giving us some interesting details about tarot cards and a clear sense of imminent danger.
