Kate Sterns has never had a boyfriend and never been part of the "cool" crowd. But during a driver education class, she mistakes left for right and inadvertently stops an escaping convict for the police. She makes the news -- the front page of the Wainscott Gazette. All of a sudden, she's in demand. The in crowd wants to know her better, and her old friend Jodi feels snubbed.

Kate doesn't realize that Roger Dawson, the guy she hit, has escaped again and is out to find her.

Steve Minder is a basketball star and Kate's chemistry tutor. He's also really cute and awfully nice. Kate assumes he's out of her league, but...

The story is told in the first person by Kate. She babbles in a typical almost sixteen-year-old manner, clearly showing the reader her insecurities and desires. She's klutzy, likable, and completely normal. Author Sproat reveals her character development in a completely accepting manner.

The mystery is fun, but a little thin. The details are fuzzy about the reason Dawson was escaping on foot with a gold chain in his hand and why his plan couldn't have waited the two months for his parole. Each chapter of the book is headed with a "wish" from a high school senior. These are fun, often poignant, and usually thought provoking. There is some underage drinking, described in a cautionary manner. This is a fine teen novel, dealing with early romance in a light, non-preachy way.
