| Paul Loughton is the mayor of his small town. He is also a lawyer and is thinking about running for a higher office. Randy Martin only comes back to this small town for his twenty-year class reunion to prove to them all just how wrong they were about the boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Once there, he comes face to face with Paul Loughton, whose face, from his past, still haunts his dreams.
Paul's a study in what it means to be a man tormented by inner demons. On the surface, Paul is that all-American popular guy sports star from high school who has gone on to become a successful man. But underneath, he lives a life that is dictated by his father and he has no real emotions about anything. Randy Martin is the boy from the wrong side of the tracks that faced adversity and overcame it to become wildly successful. All of this could have made him a difficult man but instead Randy appreciates what he has and knows that the struggle it took to get there makes it so much more worthwhile. When the two meet again at their twenty-year class reunion, Paul is forced to face what he has spent so long hiding from himself and others. He is gay. The developing relationship between the two men was well written with fascinating insight into the emotions and fears that Paul must overcome. Randy is a man that is out of the closet but understands some of what Paul faces. Randy still hasn’t told his mother the truth about himself because he feels that the news could disrupt her already fragile health. The emotions the men reveal range from self-loathing to ecstasy and Shayla Kersten has used a deft hand to portray the obstacles that these men will have to overcome to find a love.
