Pressed Pennies is much more than a novel about coming of age on Freedom Avenue. The main characters of Rick, Abby, Tracey, Vinny, and Grant all have different families and come of age in the 1980's. This is a time when parents unknowingly changed their children world's by trying to keep up with the luxuries of living well. This in turn caused severe trauma to their children. Freedom Avenue is perfectly depicted as the all-American street. Neighborhood kids hung out together, knew each others parents well and went through the changes suffered when circumstances arose that they had no control over. Lives were changed and the future no longer held the security it once did.

I loved reading this book! Steven Manchester's descriptive writing makes you feel as if you are really living on Freedom Avenue. The difficulties of living in a different family and all it's dynamics is a theme throughout this novel. The hope, dreams, realistic childhoods and moments of America is captured in the characters of Rick, Abby, Tracey, Grant, Vinny and all their respective families. They grow up with the same rebellion and demons that all kids do. Their families may be different, but they are best friends and entwined within each other's souls through heartache and death. Reading this allows the reader to transcend time and go back , if only just a little while, to childhood. Anyone looking to experience nostaligia at it's best must read this great book. I went through all the emotions reading this book, laughter, sadness, crying and happiness. Highly recommended!
