In 1862 Jenna Carson is alone on her family's farm. Her mother died long ago, her father died while doctoring rebel soldiers and she hasn't heard from her brother, a Union soldier. Many are dead because of the battle at Antietam, others injured including rebel soldier, Major Miles Hanson, Jenna finds on her property. While she nurses him back to health they fall in love, but when he leaves, Billy Mayfield, a Union soldier captures and imprisons him in his house, along with Jenna's brother. Billy has his eye on Jenna and will do anything and everything to get her, even murder. Jenna, who has been helping to care for rebel prisoners, learns Miles may be alive and enlists the aid of one of them in order to find and free Miles. Will they succeed or will Jenna have to suffer the punishment Billy wants to mete out to her?

I loved this historical novel. The setting is very realistic with the description of the injured soldiers, both Union and Confederate. The author does a great job with this story itself, of a woman who supports the Union and falls in love with a rebel, and the reader has no difficulty with the juxtaposition of Confederate and Union soldiers, some of them actually working together. Jenna is a very caring and brave woman, her life torn by the horrid war. Miles is a wonderful hero, steadfast and compassionate and it is easy for the reader to fall in love with him as well. The love scenes are sensitive and beautifully done. The supporting characters are also well done. Billy is a truly evil man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants, Jenna, even if it means murder. The author did a wonderful job with the love scenes, all the while adding the danger of discovery.

I will most definitely read more of this author's works.
