Condemned by his people and named rogue, Donte has but one goal - kill Thad. The darkmage will die at his hands. Towards that goal, he seeks to bond with a princess of the Cities. Moriko has known betrayal and her kingdom is now grave danger from the darkmages. She agrees to bond with the dangerous rogue and finds her true calling. Donte is a killer and more will die before he's done. He sees no future beyond his goal but Moriko will never give up on him. As Donte's plan reaches its violent conclusion, both their lives are stake and with them, the future of both their peoples.
This is a gripping story of pain and sacrifice, love and loss. Part of a complex series, this story can be read on its own but I don't recommend that you do. The author has woven an intense and dark tale that comes together with each book and creates something more than the sum of its parts. The relationship between Donte and Moriko is as disturbing as it is beautiful but nothing less would work for these two. There are a number of sensual and erotic scenes that only begin to hint at the connection between them. Outside of this sweltering sexual activity, the hauntingly dark plot continues to reveal itself. With vivid descriptions and heartbreaking confrontations, readers feel Donte and Moriko's pain, both physical and emotional. This story is satisfying on its own, nonetheless, it will leave fans longing for next one. If anyone is looking to start an epic fantasy series, I highly recommend beginning this one. It's a thrilling ride but not for the faint of heart.
