| Randall Grey is a gay detective in 1948 Las Vegas. He has more friends in low places than not. He is trying to get by on the work he has when Lily walks into his office and offers him money to help find out who killed her protégé. Lily has money and moves in the same circles of the who's who in Las Vegas. Randall has to find the killer, while dealing with half truths and secrets of people who cannot afford to have it know that they operate with certain circles of society. Can he solve the murder and keep his secrets too?
This was a fast paced story full of twists and turns. It is reminiscent of old time detective stories. I could almost picture it on the silver screen with my some of my favorite actors in key roles. The plot is well written and full of suspense, and while I figured it out midway through the book, it was still quite enjoyable and did not bother me at all. The characters were witty and clever. Randall seemed to have a sarcastic mouth that seemed to get him into trouble a lot, but he does not come off as obnoxious it is just part of his charm. Lily is the classic femme fatale with the heart of not exactly gold but maybe tarnished silver, she starts off seeming a bit cold and manipulative, but once we get to know her story, she is very likable and real. The sub-characters all seem to have their secrets but are wonderful additions to the story and make the story all the better for being in it. There are a few steamy m/m situations in the story, but the authors meshes them into the story wonderfully so that it just builds upon the character's personalities and gives you a little better understanding of them. I enjoyed how there story is full of loving relationships and yet not any one is the story. This story is great for the mystery and the romance reader.
