| Judge Katie McKinley was an Iraqi War widow. Her husband, David, had been killed just shortly before he was to retire and return home. He left Katie and twin boys, Keen and Cameron. Katie worked long hours so her mother took care of the boys when she was away. She was known as a stern, 'by-the-book' judge who ruled by her standards regardless of who was before her court. Her long-lost friend, Graham Bishop, found this out first hand. He and his mother lost the family farm through a ruling she agonized over. Now she was receiving death threats. The sheriff felt Graham was the primary suspect, even though Graham had previously worked as a deputy sheriff.
Graham Bishop's wife had died. He had loved her but not the way he had loved Katie since the third grade. He lost his loving feeling for a while -- he was furious, actually, when Katie ruled against his suit. He had never gotten over her. Even though he was a prime suspect in Katie's threats, he felt it was someone else. He believed it was Scott Tillman, his ex-best friend that had taken Katie away from him their senior year in high school. This was a very suspenseful inspirational romance. I believe it's my first by this author. Ms. Anne Patrick succeeded in changing my mind about the genre. I usually would not read one at all. This definitely changed the way I feel. I had trouble finding stopping places while reading this book. It was an emotionally charged, dynamic book that exposed the main characters' innermost feelings. Regardless of the topsy-turvy lives of Graham and Katie, Patrick managed to captivate my interest. This book was full of details which depicted the depths of feelings these two people had for each other. The secondary characters were many and very important to the overall story. The plot was emotional and kept my attention. I was thrilled with the book. I highly recommend this book to everyone. There were poignant moments throughout which made the book flow well. I can guarantee you will look for other books by this author -- I know I will.
