Whisper Silksinger has seen her parents and grandparents killed by devils that threaten to overrun the world. Protecting an ancient tea kettle that holds the ember that is the Djinn, Azazel, is her job as the last of the Silksinger clan. She wants to put him on his throne in hopes that he will awake and help save the world. Hirik is a Mothmage, a clan shunned because people believe they betrayed the ancient dragon who protected the Djinn. He has to hide what he is from the world because he really wants to find the Djinn, Azazel, and become his champion to defend against the invading devils.

Laini Taylor continues this series with more excellent characters whose personalities will draw you to them. Faeries, imps, mothmages, snags, all built with the kind of persona and attention to detail that makes them real. The evil Ethiag is a perfect monster. He's ugly, described in a way that helps us see him in our mind's eye and shiver. He has a boss who's even worse because he's a conniving, sneaky so and so who is easy to detest.

The way this tale flows should make it a hit with people of all ages. The world Ms. Taylor builds in our mind doesn't have many humans in it to distract us from the fun of relating to crows, faeries, imps and others who fill the pages in such a way as to make this a fast moving book. There's plenty of suspense, bits of sweet romance and all the great dialogue that gets us emotionally involved with the characters. The first two books of this series have me hooked. I can't wait to see what the next one brings.
