| Elena de Burgh is recently widowed. She doesn't want to marry again, especially not to another abusive man. However, her freedom is to be short lived as the King has summoned her to court. He has sent his loyal knight, Steven de Verre to escort her. She longs to be with Steven from the moment she spots him on his big white horse. Even though she knows her duty and will honor the king’s wishes to marry a man even worse than her deceased husband, she will forever dream of Steven.
Steven has come to escort Elena to court where she will be married to a powerful border lord. He has always been attracted to Elena and felt the need to protect her. But when he sees her after so many years, he yearns to make her his. How can he walk away from her even though that is what loyalty and honor insists he do? How can he live knowing she is with another? Wow! This was a truly excellent read. Anyone who enjoys a great historical read will love this one. From the longing passion between Elena and Steven to the emotional pain at the thought of never loving one another, this one kept me drawn into its pages. I couldn't put it down. This is one to add to the keeper shelf. Bravo Ms. Halliday on a great story. I look forward to reading more from this wonderful author.
