| Tina is a hard-driving businessperson always in the fast lane, who basically doesn’t care at all about anyone, not her employees nor those in service positions with whom she must deal, such as the airport customs clerk who bars her from entry into a foreign country. When circumstances conspire to leave her stranded for hours, she “accidentally” meets a fellow traveler who pretends to be interested in dating her, but instead plants a bomb in her jacket pocket, and Tina is injured and several are killed.
The extent of her injuries are such that she requires surgery and cosmetic surgery, and wakes up in a castle she has never seen, tended only by a woman named Lana. Lana will only reveal that her employer, who has paid all the expenses associated with Tina’s surgery, is named Saint John, and that Tina’s new identity is Jade. When Tina/Jade finally encounters Saint John, she experiences an inexplicable magnetism, coupled with the need to escape and return to her life, which simply is no longer possible. A J Cove delivers a tautly plotted tale with twists and turns no reader will expect or see coming. The characters are delicious and well-delineated, and the setting is lush and gorgeous, the envy of this reviewer. Stone Guardian is a book I can heartily recommend and I expect it to become a re-reader for many.
