| Deznee Cross enjoys nothing more than finding ways to make her dad angry. So when she comes across an attractive boy being chased by strange men, she brings him home, hoping to get at her dad. She's the one who gets a surprise, though, when her dad and the boy, Kale, recognize each other. From that moment on, Deznee's life turns upside down. She learns Kale has been held at the Denazen Corporation, which she thought was a law firm where her dad worked, and forced to use his touch to kill on command. Together, they join a group of rogue Sixes to take Denazen down.
Though Dez is initially cautious around Kale due to his odd behavior, it doesn't take long for her to warm up to him. Kale's innocence draws her in and makes her want to protect him by helping him escape from the goons chasing him, especially after she overhears them talking and finds out she has become a target as well. Her willingness to help a stranger says a lot about the type of person she is. As for Kale, his wonder at all the things he's never seen or experienced highlight the type of life he's had up until the beginning of the story and make him an extremely endearing character. His actions throughout the book also show how honorable he is by trying to protect Dez from the dangers of Denazen. The main idea behind this story focusing on people with special abilities, known as Sixes, may not be completely new, but Jus Accardo's take on the idea and execution of the story will draw readers in. The action starts at the very beginning and never lets up until the very end, keeping a nice pace throughout. All of the various characters with their variety of abilities enrich the story and keep it interesting. There are a few unexpected twists that will have readers turning the pages to find out what's going to happen next. This is definitely an enjoyable book with a satisfying ending that will leave readers wanting more.
