Delia Carnell does an exceptional job telling the tale of these two people and their lives. Rebecca comes from a wealthy founding family in the state of Florida. They went broke in the depression, losing the diamond that her dad, a jewel thief, had brought back into the family. Her ex husband dumped her when his family thought a jewel thief’s daughter wasn’t a good enough mate for a rising politician. She was digging herself out of it all when her mother died of an overdose after finding out what a rat Emerson was. Jake has been to the top of his profession as a police detective and respected investigator. Smear tactics used by Emerson have helped bring him as low as he’s ever been. Ms. Carnell is masterful at helping them put their lives back together while giving us a great read.

There are some interesting secondary characters like Rebecca’s godfather Benny Fortuna, a thief just out of prison. Her uncle Marco Vasquez has her kidnapped but changes his tune when he finds out who her father is. Friend Ruth Ann and some of Jake’s cop friends also make great additions to the story.

The author develops the storyline, the characters and dialogue well as they realize what makes life livable in a better way for all of them. This is one of those books that was hard to put down as the suspense built to a well done ending.
