Maxwell Friedland was cursed to live the rest of his life trapped in a painting. An artist during the Depression, he spurned his sponsor and felt his wrath. Tyler Williams is getting over an ex lover's betrayal and dealing with the fallout of coming out to his parents, receives a consolation gift from his sister. It's a life sized nude painting of Maxwell. Tyler is drawn to the painting and is totally captivated. Maxwell is equally enamored of him. Canvas and glass are the least of the barriers separating them, but what deceives the eye can't deceive the heart.

Trompe L'Oeil is a very different and certainly quirky love story. I was fascinated and eager to read after reading the author's blurb. I wasn't disappointed, all of the characters are charming and the story is more than engaging. The story is told from Maxwell and Tyler's point of view. Although Maxwell's voice is heard through his inner thoughts, the agony he feels being trapped and not being able to communicate with Tyler is powerful. There are lots of layers to this story including the mystery and paranormal aspects. Above everything else it's a love story. You might have to suspend belief on some level, but the author is very clever in making the premise work. You come to believe in the romance and I found myself giddy with delight as more of the story unfolded. I also enjoyed the way the author formed the sex scenes to correlate with the story. Well done. The ending is one I hoped for. I look forward to reading more books from the author, this one was a treat.
